Workplace Safety Resources
Employers have a legal obligation to protect the health and safety of their employees and other people who might be affected by what they do. This section is intended to be used as a resource to inform & educate employers about these obligations, and provide access to useful information & resources.
Manual Handling Regulations
Some health and safety regulations are particularly relevant to dealing with back pain in the workplace:
- Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (revised 2002) require an employer to carry out a risk assessment on the manual handling tasks that pose a risk of injury.
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Regulation 3 requires that all employers assess the risks to the health and safety of their employees while they are at work.
Manual Handling Resources
The UK Health and Safety Executive produces a range of useful & informative leaflets and information packs with advice on manual handling issues. We have made these resources available to you:
- Better Backs campaign introductory leaflet. A national campaign to tackle back pain and upper limb disorders at work.
- Getting to Grips with Manual Handling gives help on assessment, pushing and pulling, handling technique and the law.
- Are you making the best use of lifting and handling aids? shows the types of handling aids available for a wide range of tasks and includes things to consider when choosing handling aids.
- Manual handling assessment charts designed to help assess the most common risk factors in lifting.
